In September, IWC launched three new styles of TOP GUN series ceramic materials, all designed based on pilot chronograph watches, namely the “Royal Maces” Royal Hammer Special Edition, the “Tophatters” High-hat Special Edition and the “Tophatters” Special Edition. Blue Angels®” Blue Angel Special Edition, these three ceramic watches are all known by their names. They come from the cooperation between IWC and the elite squadron of the US Navy. The appearance draws on the logo and color elements of the corresponding squadron. Recently, we have also photographed these three new games. Today, we will focus on Blue Angel and introduce them to you in detail through real-life pictures.
Cousins may be unfamiliar with the two naval flying squadrons, Royal Hammer and Top Hat Men, but I believe the Blue Angels aerobatic team are more familiar with them. In 2019, IWC officially launched a formal cooperation with this aviation demonstration team with the yellow and blue logo, providing it with exclusive special edition watches. IWC has also been transforming the process of creating flight watches into engineers and designers, working with them. A communication platform for pilots to better understand pilots’ real needs and feedback.
Speaking of the watch, the watch is made of blue ceramic case with a diameter of 44.5 mm and a thickness of 15.7 mm. It should be noted that the case is not the new 41 size, but the original large size. This kind of blue ceramic is made by IWC by mixing zirconium oxide with other metal oxides, but I think compared with the first blue ceramic watch released by the brand not long ago, Lawrence Sports, even though they are all blue, Colored ceramics, but the visual effects will be slightly different. One is obviously matte, which is a dull texture, while the Blue Angel has a more vivid color, and the other two use black zirconia ceramics.
The other side of the watch is equipped with a screw-in crown and chronograph button made of Ceratanium® porcelain titanium metal. The chronograph button is also decorated with yellow elements, making the watch more echo the color of the Blue Angels squadron. Ceramic titanium, a special titanium alloy, ceramizes the metal surface during the production process, so that the titanium metal also has a ceramic-like appearance and scratch resistance.
The dial of the watch is also made of blue ceramics and is embellished with yellow elements. The overall style still continues the flight meter cockpit instrument design, the large hour-marker hands, and the classic triangle logo at 12 o’clock. This year I also saw a lot of 41mm Green Flymeters. Looking back at the 44.5mm large-size Flymeter, there is no doubt that the overall disk is more spacious and the various display functions are well-proportioned. There is a day calendar display window with yellow characters on a blue background at 3 o’clock, a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock, and a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock.
This series of watches all add squadron emblems to the small seconds dial. This one has the Blue Angels emblem with a diamond-shaped formation of 4 aircraft. The other two models have hammer-shaped emblems and high hat emblems.
When it comes to pilot watches, luminescence is indispensable. The 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock marks and hands of the watch are all coated with luminous paint, so that the watch can emit fluorescence even in dimly lit environments, ensuring clear reading. The picture above is a real picture of the luminous watch.
After admiring the front of the watch, let’s take a look at the back. The grade 5 titanium bottom cover is also engraved with the 4-machine formation and the blue angel body logo. The bottom is equipped with an IWC self-made 69380 movement. It is equipped with a column wheel to control the timing function and a two-way pawl winding with excellent efficiency. It can provide a power reserve of up to 46 hours after the chain is fully charged. The watch is also equipped with a soft iron inner case, which effectively protects the movement from magnetic fields. The waterproof performance of the entire watch is 60 meters.
The watch is equipped with a blue rubber strap lined with blue fabric, but it is a pity that the large-size flying watch is not equipped with the EasX-CHANGE system for easy and quick strap replacement.
